YIKES! Google is grabbing my photos without me being aware.

Filed under: Uncategorized — teddytowncrier @ 2:11 pm

Cell and tablet cameras are handy for “Capturing the moment” and use mine frequently.

The quality is amazing. … Am not a photo geek but well satisfied with the outcomes.

I’ve rigged my devices to automatically upload shots to my Dropbox account where they can be easier manipulated on a computer.

So far so good except, until I discovered that they were now in my Google Photos and my terms of service permits the Big G to do whatever they wish with my photos including selling them. …

Android Authority on Youtube does a fine job spelling out these concerns in this Video.

These photos contain an amazing amount of information including time & date, location end possibly even the names of the subject.
So if you told your boss that you were with a client all afternoon and he sees a picture that clearly indicates that it was taken on the other side of town; It’s ‘splain’ time.

My answer to these concerns is to head over to Amazon and grab a 2 Terrabyte, Plug & Play external drive to store my pictures.   … Seagate drives are frequently available for under $100.

 Bestest.

Google’s snooping Royally ticked me off, today.

Filed under: Uncategorized — teddytowncrier @ 11:40 am

Royally Ticked today.

I’m generally philosophical about most things but this Google Pop-up just announced that Google had added my personal phone number to my account and provided instructions for making changes.

Popped up once & I haven’t been able to recall the Pop-Up.

What yanked my chain is that I don’t include this number on any web work and seldom pass it out.

Am kinda puzzled where they obtained this number.

I can jump through the hoops to modify my Google account but permission to record this personally identifiable information wasn’t provided to Google. …. Negative options aren’t cool.

First hand experience of Big Sibling snooping my mail and offering to help me.

Filed under: Uncategorized — teddytowncrier @ 11:02 am

A bud and I were banging on, via email,  about enjoying distant vacation spots and Whaddayaknow? … “Big Sibling” appended suggested phrases, to his mail to me,  for inclusion in my reply.

Not too concerned though since Uncle George alerted us to “Big Sibling” in 1949 and only now in 2018 has it hit me squarely between the eyes

what mischief he is really up to in our life.

The Big G had read my incoming mail, added it’s contents to their Mega Data, parsed this communication & provided me with their own reply suggestions

Isn’t that just so precious, Sugar?

Newest Mega Snoopers Are out-smarting the Boffins

Filed under: Uncategorized — teddytowncrier @ 4:56 pm
Snoopers are everywhere. … Many of us safeguard our credit cards & other electronically readable items with a special wallet but i may not be enought.
The referenced article indicates it may not be sufficient & be time for “Plan B”.
My own current precautions are:
A. … Any on line financials are done via “Hard wired”  connections.  …. Never over Wi-Fi.
B. … Do not use ‘Tap only” cards for purchases.
C. … Use a 2nd bank account for paying bills.
D. … Only pre-paid cards are used for on-line purchases.

I always say “Yes”!

Filed under: Uncategorized — teddytowncrier @ 5:37 pm

Ask me to lend you $100 ’til payday and I’ll say “Yes”!

Ask me if I know where you can get a million dollars & will gladly say “Yes”!

THERE ARE A FEW EXCEPTIONS:   When a stranger calls me on the phone and asks if I can hear them. … My answer is NOT “YES”. … The only answer should be IMMEDIATELY HANG UP or let your generic Voice-Mail take your calls.

It’s an automatic reaction to answer “Yes” to a simple question like “Can you hear me”? However: There are demons lurking; Your voice may be recorded, run through an algorithm and your “yes” can be part of a legally binding contract.

Scenario No. 2. … Your conversation is again recorded and run through a process ready to attach to a carefully prepared script which is then “boiler roomed” to every one of your contacts. …. The recipients will listen to this call because they’re familiar with your voice and happily wait for “A Director” to come on the line. …. The trap is now sprung.

Discover how the ‘Can you hear me?’ phone scam works:  Click Here.

And it’s not just your voice being spoofed. … They’re switching faces on porn videos and you (Or loved ones) can be awakened by a phone call that informs you that you now are a star and there may be nothing that you can do about it.  Info here.

You may be a Porn Star without even knowing.

Caution Indelicate Content.

At first glance: I didn’t give a Tinker’s if someone grabbed my image, ran it through an A. I (Artificial Intelligence) algorithm, stuck this visage on a movie and made me an Internet Star but on further reflection it could be really sticky if there were children involved in this dubious, unauthorized creativity.

Kiddy Porn seems to be a huge business and we’re increasingly, seeing reports where police forces have collaborated across multiple continents and are collaring pervs with thousands of images in their possession. …. There is a demand for kiddie pics as well as boys and girls of all ages.

Whether from mischief, lover’s revenge, profit or other nefarious uses; Innocent lives are going to be devastated from this improper use of this technology.

You’re aware that when we OK providor’s terms of service; We may have given said providor exclusive rights in perpetuity, to all content that we post.

Need a hair raising yarn? … Read your favourite Social Media’s terms of service. … It doesn’t take a Ph D in rocket science to realize that you have given your permission for those comments and pictures that you proudly and lovingly share, could be sold (Over & over again) to anyone with an untraceable, Pre-Paid credit card.

Not wishing to lay all the blame at the feet of Social Media; There are “Scrapers” that can crawl the web and make face replacement a piece of cake.

One small defense for us; Would be to use an image editor and add noticeable, identifying text to the image before sharing. …. One of my favourite image editors is IrfanView. … Its easy to use & you’ll be able to add text and identify where you posted the image.

I don’t have more of an answer for you. … If you do: Your input is welcomed.

YOU STINK! … Don’t knock it. Data from human gasses can be valuable.

Filed under: Uncategorized — teddytowncrier @ 2:45 pm

OK! Just what I needed to know today but concepts in the referenced article are no surprise since our wallet can be ‘sniffed’ to determine if our Transit Pass is up to date.

Can we expect those ‘Security Pillars” that stores are using to ‘sniff out’ shoplifters as they exit the store. Will they be ‘enhanced’ & our ‘gas envelope’ similarly sniffed and the data sold interested parties.

I expect to be assured that its ‘Meta data’ being collected without any identifying information.

Can we now talk about that bridge?

Your vehicles’ electronic systems can kill.

Filed under: Uncategorized — teddytowncrier @ 1:27 pm

Dateline: Toronto, Canada.

We sadly lost another Angel.

Camila Torcato

An unoccupied vehicle moved and killed this precious soul.  … At time of writing: Cause of the movement had not been established.

Today’s cars are loaded with sensors, some of which control the transmission. … Do some research and we discover that these sensors and other electronic controls are not foolproof and do malfunction, often at inconvenient (and dangerous) times.

When your vehicle is unattended: The engine must be off, Transmission selector in “Park” position and the brake applied.

First Hand Report: … I’m aware of these dangers from unattended vehicles, having had a vehicle ‘run away’.  …  Our home was poorly positioned on the residential street and had a steep driveway.

As a contractor with several vehicles; Safety was uppermost in my mind, at all times and parking instructions were clear. … Engine Off, Transmission in ‘Park’, key removed,  Brake on, a blocking brick under the rear wheel and the vehicle locked. (Sounds like a control freak but the down side was too big).

Arriving home one evening to discover the children had been in the unlocked car and had moved the drive selector. … The vehicle had careened across the street and killed a neighbours tree.

We were fortunate. … The angels were still with me.

A bouquet & A suggestion for Rogers.

Filed under: Uncategorized — teddytowncrier @ 1:11 pm

I’d like to be clear that my interactions with Rogers’ reps have generally been satisfactory whether in person, online or via the telephone. The sole exception being their Queensway, Etobicoke office where they wanted to see my driver’s licence before talking to me.

Rogers gets a lot of ‘stick’ but I’m fairly well satisfied with what they provide for me, even thought it does grate a bit when I’ve been a client for over ten years and they’re offering new clients a far better deal than I have. … Maybe it is time to take a closer look at other offers.

A few years ago; I’d wandered into Rogers’ 1030 Adelaide St, London store where manager Matt took a look at my account, made a few adjustments and made me a happy camper.

Another important plus was that I now had a “Goto” person and didn’t have to wait interminably, on the phone, for a Customer Rep.

Fast forward a couple of years and noticing main line suppliers, including Rogers, were scrambling to challenge Freedom Mobile’s latest offer. …. I already have goto contacts and a sweet mobile deal with Freedom. It was time to have a chat with Matt and re-align not only, my account but also, those of a few friends & clients.

A snowy slushy day in January, 2018 and I’d dropped in to have a chat with Matt and expected the store to be busy on account of the recent, seemingly sweet deals they were offering. … I was prepared to wait.

Customer Care Rep Curtis was just finishing up with a client and I took the opportunity to mention that I was looking for Matt. … Here’s Curtis’ reply that he tossed over his shoulder, before I had finished and as he scurried away: …

“YES WE DO HAVE A MATT HERE BUT THERE’S A QUEUE OF PEOPLE AND YOU’LL HAVE TO WAIT” (Paraphrased). ….. You sure told me, Curtis!

Our hero, Curtis, didn’t have a clue whom he was addressing and my innocuous enquiry seemed to be a developing inconvenience for him.

Here’s your clue, Curtis: … Times are a-changing. … “Cutting the cord” is on almost, everyone’ lips. … Many of us are vaguely aware of the 1,500 channel universe and the term “Kodi” is arousing more interest with each passing day. … I never had “The Cord” and my 22 broadcast channels come over the air (OTA) via a premium antenna.

Let’s look at the telephone side of your employer’s business. for a moment: …. I have 10 phone lines. … Some Canadian, some US and a couple of European providors. … Most of them are freebies and those that I choose to pay for are cellular lines which cost me $7/Mth and $25/Annually, respectively. … These two are from household names that almost everyone would recognize. … Would you concede that I may know a bit about VOIP & Cellular telephony and where the best bang for the buck is? …. (Bring me your phone & $100 and I’ll give you free US & Canada cell service and toss in free texting).

Major consideration No.3: … I’m the (Unpaid) goto tech guy for a couple of dozen friends and the tech guy for a dozen or so business folks.

How much would losing a couple of dozen accounts cost his employer over the next 10 years and how would said employer feel about unnecessarily, losing half a million dollars in revenue?

So here we are today: … Ted is wondering how someone who could use more training in customer care is allowed to interact with customers? … If I were a vindictive person and Curtis’ shabby treatment motivated me to “Not get mad, Get even”: Maybe returning to the store, handing out a pamplet & and telling everyone in the line that I’m getting cell & TV for free & they can too, would give me a chuckle.

Maybe I’ll return to their parking lot and plaster every car with my promo. (Or should I wait ’till Saturday morning and give everybody in their store a brochure)?
