A French-Canadian buys a $35 Million Russian space ticket. … So What?

One of today’s top Canadian news stories is about French Canadian businessman, Cirque du Soleil creator Guy Laliberté investing $35 Million in a Russian space ride.

The talking heads are already blabbing about how the money could have been better spent on humanitarian causes.

Since M. Laliberté is already significantly and quietly, doing his part for the have not community; I don’t have any qualms about him investing his own money.

This is a man who will have a firm hand on his charities and expects to squeeze every dollar to do double duty.

The fascinating aspect to this story is that he may have a tax write off for this trip and his research during the trip, could easily transform into another couple of hundred real jobs.

Enjoy your trip M. Laliberté! …. You’ve earned it and we’re eagerly anticipating seeing what you’ll do with the experience.

When I need a flashlight; Dead batteries aren’t my idea of a fun trip and can instantly transform my usual sweet, attentive disposition into something entirely unrecognizable.

It gets better ….. I’ve discovered a “Wind Up” that is a combo high sensitivity radio, LED flashlight and it even charges your Cell Phone.

This gadget even raised these jaded eyebrows. ….

I filled my water tank, today as an emergency precaution.

Filling a water tank is not a huge deal until the electricity is off and we don’t have water.   I’ve had too many warnings that this can happen to me that I’m now starting to heed the warnings.

One snowy night, many years ago we were returning from finishing a contract 50 miles away and none of the traffic lights were functioning. … Neither were the street lamps nor power to the houses.

Fortunately I lived in a conventional house and didn’t have to climb 20 flights of stairs to get home but not having dinner nor any water was not the most exciting welcome to a tough drive home after working all day.

On another occasion; We were returning home from the job and noticed a huge steam cloud on the horizon. … My first thought was that there was a “meltdown” at the nuclear generating station on the edge of town. …. Guess what? … Meltdown at the nuclear generating station on the edge of town. …. A reactor had malfunctioned!

Since then we’ve experienced several power outages from equipment malfunctions, someone knocking over a power pole and ice storms tearing the transmission lines down.     Fortunately; I’ve never endured too much inconvenience or discomfort but some communities have been without power for weeks.

Also;   There are folks around that plain don’t like us (Remember Pan-Am Lockerbie and 9-11?)     I fully expect an attack on our electrical supply and distribution network and needed to be ready when power is interrupted.

The water tank mentioned earlier was purchased from the corner store for $10.   These bottles were supposed to go back to the bottled water supplier for a $10 refund but I managed to purchase one instead.

I’ve had candles, battery radio and reflective space blankets for a while and always have a fair stock of food on hand … Just in case.

My next purchases will be a Charcoal Bar- B-Q    (Gas cylinders can leak). and a wind up radio because I don’t have too much luck finding fully charged batteries when I need them.

The whole ball of wax has only cost me $50 and it’s a really cheap insurance policy for the next time we lose power.    I’m in a Highrise but if in a house; I’d certainly be adding a generator to the mix.

Show someone you care and Retweet this article and when their power goes out   They’ll be indebted to you for life.   (Baby sitting, mowing the lawn, moving help).

It will determine whether the hotel/airline gives you an upgrade.

It may also determine whether you pay for the bus to the airport or the hotel places their limo at your disposal.

It also puts the supplier on notice that you are likely to report on this transaction and they may increase service or avoid doing business with you, for this reason alone.

This is the other edge of the Twitter sword which can cut both ways. …. Twitter is about to become a powerhouse never imagined. … An exploding new era of opportunity that we need to be aware of.

There are many detractors about Twitter but for every overheated scribe or self-important talking head that’s looking down their nose at Twitter …. There are ten others who can demonstrate how Twitter is filling their coffers. …..

Is Location, Location, Location still the golden rule of property buying?

In a recent Tweet @notestateagents posed the question “Is Location, Location, Location still the golden rule of property buying?”

My criteria for purchasing property is “Do the numbers work?” which can let us make serious offers, sight unseen, without squandering our lives driving all over town checking properties which then fall apart due to financing.

Since buying a house is often the biggest purchase many of us make;    Price, Location & “Pretty” can be a major factor for many.

My perspective is that the numbers have to work. ….. We can indulge ourselves at a later time when we have the resources to write a cheque for the full purchase price and not feel it.

That’s my N. American view point. … Whether you are a Purchaser/Seller, Mortgage Broker, Attorney Or Real Estate professional;    Your constructive input; Whether a strategy, a personal experience or a question.   It is welcomed on this important topic.
